The practical details that can make the difference between an easy holiday and a tiring one
Choosing a Tenerife hotel when you’re older is not necessarily about finding an “accessible” hotel.
For many travellers, the things that really matter are much more ordinary: how far the room is from the restaurant, whether there is a lift, how steep the road outside is and whether you can easily reach a café, pharmacy, taxi or promenade.
A beautiful hotel in the wrong location can make every day unnecessarily difficult. A well-positioned hotel with the right facilities can make a Tenerife holiday remarkably easy.
Start with the location, not the hotel
This is probably the most important piece of advice.
Tenerife’s southern resorts climb quite quickly away from the coast in some areas. Two hotels that appear close together on a map can therefore offer very different experiences.
- 📍 Check the actual position of the hotel
- ⛰ Look carefully at surrounding hills and gradients
- 🌊 Check the walking route to the seafront
- 🍽 See what restaurants and shops are genuinely nearby
A hotel advertised as being 500 metres from the beach may sound convenient, but those 500 metres matter rather more if the return journey is steeply uphill.
Our guide to the flattest Tenerife resorts for older visitors can help when choosing an area.
Think about how large the hotel actually is
Large resort hotels can be wonderful, but they can also involve far more walking than guests anticipate.
- 🏨 Long corridors between rooms and lifts
- 🍽 Restaurants in another part of the complex
- 🏊 Pools some distance from accommodation blocks
- 🌴 Large gardens and multiple levels
A traveller who comfortably manages a short walk outside may still find repeated journeys across a large hotel tiring.
If walking is a concern, ask whether a room can be allocated reasonably close to the lift and main facilities.
Check the lifts properly
“The hotel has a lift” does not always answer the question you actually need to ask.
- 🛗 Does the lift reach your room floor?
- 🏊 Can you reach the pool without steps?
- 🍽 Is the restaurant accessible by lift?
- 🚪 Is there step-free access from reception to the street?
Some Tenerife hotels have been built across sloping sites, so different sections of the property may sit at different levels.
If avoiding stairs matters, ask specific questions before booking rather than simply checking for a lift symbol on the hotel listing.
Look at the bathroom before you book
Bathrooms are one of the most common places where a perfectly good hotel room becomes impractical for an older traveller.
- 🚿 Walk-in showers may be easier than baths
- 🛁 Climbing into a bath can become difficult
- 🪑 A shower seat may be useful
- 🚽 Grab rails can provide additional confidence
If specific bathroom equipment is required, confirm exactly what the hotel provides rather than assuming it will be available.
Our guide to mobility equipment provided by Tenerife hotels explains why this is worth checking.
Think about the swimming pool too
A hotel pool can look fantastic in photographs but still be awkward to use.
- 🏊 How do you actually enter the water?
- 🪜 Is there only a vertical ladder?
- 🪜 Are there proper steps with a handrail?
- ☀ Is there somewhere comfortable to sit nearby?
If swimming is an important part of the holiday, older visitors may also want to ask whether the pool is heated during the winter months.
Half board can be more useful than you expect
There is a tendency to think of half board as slightly old-fashioned, but it can make a great deal of sense for older travellers.
- 🍳 Breakfast is already organised
- 🍽 Dinner does not require another journey
- 😴 Tired days become much easier
- 💰 Holiday spending becomes more predictable
You can still eat elsewhere whenever you want. Having the option of simply going downstairs for dinner can be surprisingly valuable after a long day.
Self-catering offers a different kind of freedom
For longer stays, an apartment or aparthotel may work better.
- ☕ Breakfast whenever you want it
- 🍳 Ability to prepare simple meals
- 🛒 More control over food and dietary preferences
- 🏠 A more relaxed home-from-home routine
Our guide to Tenerife apartments versus hotels looks at the advantages of both options in more detail.
Check what is immediately outside the hotel
For an older traveller, the surrounding 500 metres can matter more than attractions 20 kilometres away.
Useful things to look for include:
- 💊 A nearby pharmacy
- 🛒 Supermarket or convenience shop
- ☕ Cafés and restaurants
- 🚕 Taxi rank or easy taxi pick-up point
- 🌊 Straightforward access to the promenade
Having everyday facilities close at hand means you do not need to organise transport every time you want a coffee or need something from the shops.
A sea view isn’t always worth the hill
This is particularly relevant in Costa Adeje and parts of Los Cristianos.
Hotels higher above the coast can offer spectacular views — precisely because they are higher above the coast.
- 🌅 Better views can mean steeper surroundings
- ⛰ Walking back from dinner may be difficult
- 🚕 Regular taxi journeys may become necessary
- 📍 A less dramatic view in a better location may prove more useful
If mobility is limited, convenience usually wins surprisingly quickly once the holiday begins.
Don’t assume a five-star hotel will automatically be easier
Luxury and practicality are not the same thing.
A large five-star resort may involve substantial walking, while a smaller three or four-star hotel in an excellent seafront location could be considerably easier to manage.
- ⭐ Star rating tells you about facilities and service standards
- 🚶 It does not tell you how far you will walk each day
- ⛰ It does not tell you whether the road outside is steep
- 🚿 It does not guarantee the bathroom suits your needs
Choose according to how you expect to use the hotel rather than the number of stars beside its name.
Los Cristianos can be particularly convenient
For older visitors who want restaurants, cafés, beaches, taxis and a promenade within relatively easy reach, central Los Cristianos remains one of the most practical choices in South Tenerife.
However, the resort rises inland, so accommodation location still matters enormously.
Our destination guide to Los Cristianos for older travellers explains why the central and seafront areas work particularly well.
Read reviews differently
Hotel reviews become much more useful when you stop looking only at whether guests liked the breakfast.
Search recent reviews for words such as:
- 🔎 “hill”
- 🔎 “steps”
- 🔎 “lift”
- 🔎 “walking”
- 🔎 “promenade”
- 🔎 “taxi”
Comments from previous guests can reveal practical details that are difficult to judge from hotel photographs.
Call the hotel when something genuinely matters
If a particular requirement could determine whether the holiday works, verify it directly.
- 📞 Ask about step-free routes
- 🛗 Confirm lift access
- 🚿 Check bathroom arrangements
- ♿ Ask about wheelchair or mobility equipment
- 📍 Request a room close to essential facilities if necessary
It is much easier to solve these questions before arriving than after discovering a problem with your room.
The bottom line
The best Tenerife hotel for an older traveller is not necessarily the most luxurious, newest or most highly rated.
It is the hotel that makes everyday life easy.
A convenient location, manageable walking distances, sensible room allocation, good lift access and restaurants, shops and taxis nearby can contribute far more to an enjoyable holiday than an impressive list of facilities you never use.
